The object that looks like an artillery shell is actually a cocktail shaker set. The top half screws off and is the shaker while the bottom half contains glasses.

McCullough Dawn

Dawn in the McCullough Peaks Wilderness area. This was looking west towards Cody. Smoke from the California wildfires had moved into the area overnight and caused amazing colors for the sunrise.

Yawning Heron

This heron was hanging out on the logs at the South end of String Lake. It had caught a fish just a few moments before and gave one large yawn and then settled in like this for the next half hour.

Not long after this there was a chipmunk running back and forth on the logs, and the Heron was certainly interested in a second meal, but the chipmunk seemed to know exactly how far away to stay and despite the Heron's repeated attentions, the chipmunk survived.

Oxbow Bend, Full Moon

Oxbow Bend shot entirely by the light of the full moon.

It seems that if you go to the Tetons you have to shoot this iconic location, and I admit to being no different.

Photographers were beginning to line the banks at 4:30AM to stake out there claim to a spot from which they could shoot the sunrise. However, no one else seemed to be shooting in the dark as they waited. At 6:30 vans began to disperse tour groups and things began to get a little ridiculous. On this morning that was also when the storm clouds moved in covering the Tetons and when I gladly left for quieter locations.

Tetons Dawn Glow

First light on the Tetons.
There was a prescribed burn happening in the north end of the park and this morning there was just enough smoke behind me to add some nice color to the sunrise. The fire laid down every night we were there, so the park wasn't filled with smoke, just enough on the north end to add a little atmosphere to the light.

Behind the Dunes

I drove along the four-wheel drive road that goes up Mt. Blanca and climbed into the dunes from a parking spot behind along the road. I got high enough to capture this view looking southerly towards the entrance of the park just after sunset.

Great Sand Dunes National Monument, Colorado.

Mt Blanca Meteor

Early in the evening there were storms over Mt. Blanca with lightning that threatened to drive me off the dunes. Thankfully they began to break up just as I was considering going to a lower location. I was able to capture this meteor crossing an airplane trail as the clouds broke up.

Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado.

Lightning

Distant lightning flash illuminated the clouds during the Persiad Meteor shower. This was early in the evening as a small storm moved through the area.
Photographed from high up in the dunes at Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado. This is facing Northeast towards Mt. Blanca. There is one distant meteor just above the lower peak.

Milky Way over Alamosa

There were very few places in Colorado or Wyoming that were reported as being clear for the Persiad Meteor Shower. Sand Dunes National Monument was one of them. I left home with just enough time to get there and scout out a location to shoot from, which ended up being high in the dunes. From my location there was only one dune higher that I could see and I had great views towards Alamosa and back towards Mt. Blanca.

This shot doesn't have any meteors in it, but I loved how the low cloud cover lit up Alamosa while still blocking enough light to reveal the Milky Way.
