Yawning Heron

This heron was hanging out on the logs at the South end of String Lake. It had caught a fish just a few moments before and gave one large yawn and then settled in like this for the next half hour.

Not long after this there was a chipmunk running back and forth on the logs, and the Heron was certainly interested in a second meal, but the chipmunk seemed to know exactly how far away to stay and despite the Heron's repeated attentions, the chipmunk survived.

Collared Lizard

I've always wanted to see one of these lizards. I found him just a little further up the trail from the Diamondback in the previous post. This is the state lizard of Oklahoma and are also known as "Mountain Boomers". This is a male, the females are light brown.
